If Lala.com has it's way we might very well see the mp3 go the way of the cassette tape. Lala is a new service that essentially hosts millions of songs online that are easily and legally accessible through its online player. The player looks and works similarly to iTunes so the learning curve is rather minimal.
The way it works is both simple and ingenious. Lala checks all the mp3 files you have on your computer and adds them to your free online library so you can listen to them anywhere. Where Lala stands out is in the fact that its gotten access to over 6 million songs from the Top 4 record labels and provides you access to the entire collection and you can listen to any song/album once for free. After that, you can pay just 10 cents to "buy" that tune as a web song, added to your library, which can be played an unlimited amount of times from then on available whenever/wherever you log in. That's a whole CD accessible anywhere with an internet connection for less than $2 without hogging up hard-drive space.
If you feel like purchasing a song to add to an iPod/CD, you can for just 79 cents more (the initial 10 cents goes towards your purchase of the mp3 which is nice.) Oh and as a bonus, Lala is offering 50 free songs for your online web songs library to get you acquainted with the service.
